Joebonsai Bonsai Tree Dwarf Jade – Nursery Direct (b-dj0)

Dwarf Jade – Portulacaria afra Jadesare great Bonsai trees because they are virtually care free – perfect for beginners and old pros alike. Advanced students of bonsai find them excellent material because they adapt to any style and develop relatively quickly. Also called “Elephant Plant” it can withstand long periods without water. Technically a succulent, it stores water in its trunk, branches and leaves, and will tolerate long periods without water. This Bonsai has the classic shape of an age-old tree and although it grows slowly, it looks great right now and will continue to develop for years to come. These 3-4 year-old Bonsai trees stand 8-10 inches tall and come planted in a ceramic Bonsai pot (shapes and colors may vary). Jades can be grown indoors or outdoors but they don’t like the cold weather and should be moved inside when the temperature is 50 or below.

Similar in appearance to the “jade plant” Crassula ovata (family Crassulaceae), Portulacaria afra has smaller and rounder pads and more compact growth (shorter internodal spaces, down to 1.5 mm). It is much hardier, faster growing, more loosely branched, and has more limber tapering branches than Crassula once established.

BonsaiOutlet Bonsai Tree – – Dwarf Jade Bonsai Tree

Dwarf Jade Portulacaria Afra The Dwarf Jade or “elephant plant” is tropical native to South Africa and one of the most desirable bonsai among beginners. That is because the Dwarf jade is incredible tolerant, requiring nothing more than a little water and lots of sun – much like any house plant. Its fleshy trunk, branches, and leaves help the Dwarf Jade store water for long periods of time. The nickname “elephant plant” comes from its attraction to elephants. In feeding frenzies, the animals have been known to strip the leaves and branches off of the “elephant plant” which, a few weeks later, are already revived with a mantle of green. The Dwarf Jade is a hard tree to keep down.
